Dead wood, once a safe nesting site for countless birds, is vanishing as humans continue to clear our forests. As climate change forces southern bird species north, Sweden faces a growing housing crisis – for birds.
Human-constructed birdhouses have been reported to attract nesting birds in 80–90% of cases. This not only highlights the severe lack of natural nesting sites but also reveals the great opportunity humans have to support wildlife. However, building traditional birdhouses often requires woodworking skills and uses nails or metals that can harm trees and birds.
In response, the coder collective Bloom created Guesthouse – a birdhouse that’s easy to build, fun for all ages, and kind to both wildlife and the climate. Made from recycled plastic and inspired by the K’NEX-system, it’s fully metal-free and hangs safely from tree branches. The model was made open-source on GitHub, and through Swedish libraries, families could then 3D print the parts and give birds a safe new home.
